WATCH VIDEO

Melissa Scholten Melissa Scholten shows the process of germinating seeds at the the Western Regional Plant Introduction Station (WRPIS), using sugar beet (Beta vulgaris subsp. vulgaris) as an example. The WRPIS in Pullman, Washington is a part of the U.S. National Plant Germplasm System (NPGS) and maintains massive amounts of seeds across several collections of crops and their wild relatives. Seeds in storage must be germinated regularly to determine their viability and help inform curatorial decisions to regenerate accessions.
